All About Japan: Rainy Season

The rainy season has finally arrived in Japan as of last week. This season is called tsuyu (梅雨) in Japanese, which literally translates to ‘plum rain’, evoking the imagery of rain drops falling on the plump purple fruits, and signaling the arrival of summer. Another symbol of this season is the beautiful purple hydrangeas (あじさい) which bloom between May and July. Visiting hydrangea fields is a popular sightseeing activity during this time.

In Japan, the rainy season lasts from early June to mid-July for the main island of Honshu, and the islands of Kyushu and Shikoku, Kansai and Kanto. It starts slightly earlier in the southern island of Okinawa, around May, and the northern island of Hokkaido does not actually experience tsuyu.

This season may not exactly lend itself to particularly nice weather, or the opportunity for outdoor sightseeing, but it is very important to the success of Japan’s rice crops. Without it, the country may also face the prospect of droughts and water shortages in summer.

As you may have noticed, rainy season in Japan means high-humidity. Be very careful to keep your home as dry as possible, as the high humidity may lead to mold and rot. A dehumidifying product in Japan called shikke-tori can be used to help prevent this problem. It’s sold in packs of three, and filled with salt and silica compounds that draw the moisture out of the air and store it away as water. These shikke-tori can be found all over Japan, in supermarkets and drug stores.

It’s generally also considered to be a good idea to always carry an umbrella with you during this season, even if the skies look clear in the morning, as the downpour may start at any time!

Interior Lifestyle Tokyo

Yesterday I had the opportunity to attend the Interior Lifestyle Tokyo event held at the West Hall of Tokyo Big Site. This exhibition will be running from Wednesday, June 5 to Friday, June 7, 2013. This event is the largest and most prestigious fair for high-end interior design and products in Asia. This year’s exhibition is set to be the biggest yet, with record numbers of visitors and exhibitors expected. The admission fee is ￥2,000, although it is possible to receive free tickets by registering online.

This year’s exhibition features a wide range of both domestic and international designers, such as the ever-popular Skovby from Denmark, and DESIGNHOUSE STOCKHOLM from Japan.

There truly is something for everyone, and for all tastes and styles at this exhibition. Stellar examples include the variety of products represented by ASEAN countries, such as the beautiful and colourful quilts from Cambodia’s Mekong Quilts, and the festive displays of Christmas decorations, trees, ornaments and wreaths at Rasp Gmbh, from Austria. I personally found the furniture made from volcanic basalt fiber by designer Maffam Freeform, from Latvia, particularly interesting. The overall look of the furniture is very unique and stylish, and the design is bold. This is the only designer in the world which uses volcanic basal fiber for its furniture.

Also, be sure not to miss the limited edition food at zen-themed Trend Café, by renowned Japanese chef Hal Yamashita. The special menu includes such delicious offerings as premium curry rice, two different kinds of special Japanese rice bowls, and Japanese-style chiffon cake and yuzu flavoured cheesecake for those among us with a sweet tooth.
